Jeanette was retired and had been married to her husband Jim, also a Summerlin ’63 graduate, for 42 years. They both raised and showed rabbits. Jeanette also liked to read and crochet.
Jeanette (Melton) Mathews, 62, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her home in Axon, Ga., following an extended illness.
Born July 23, 1945, to Horace and Gladys Sheffield Melton in Douglas, Ga., Jeanette was raised in Bartow and graduated from Bartow High School. She was a longtime resident of Lakeland before moving to Axson five years ago.
She worked for 17 years as a senior secretary in the Polk County Utilities Department in Bartow before poor health forced her retirement. She was a member of Pearson Church of God of Prophecy in Pearson, Ga.
Jeanette is survived by her husband, Jim Mathews of Axson, Ga.; a daughter, April McMullins (Travis) of Minneola; her mother, Gladys S. Melton of Bartow; four brothers, Talbert Melton of Fort Myers, H.L. Melton of Ocala, C.C. Melton of Lakeland, and Ricky Melton of Bartow; a sister, Betty Binder of Bartow; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
